Chanting the mantras of Lord Shiva is believed to bring peace, strength, longevity, and liberation (moksha). Shiva is considered the most accessible and powerful deity — simply remembering his name is said to remove all distress. Regular chanting purifies the mind, removes fear, and enhances one's inner power and clarity.

॥ Moola Mantra ॥

Om Namah Shivaya.

This is the supreme and most sacred Shiva mantra. 'Om' is the cosmic sound, and 'Namah Shivaya' means 'salutations to Lord Shiva.' It is believed to simplify all complexities of life and connect the soul to the divine.

॥ Mahamrityunjaya Mantra ॥

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam.
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat.

This is the great death-conquering mantra. It protects from disease, fear, and untimely death, and bestows longevity, health, and ultimate liberation.

॥ Mahamrityunjaya Gayatri Mantra ॥

Om Haum Joom Sah.
Om Bhur Bhuvah Swaha.
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam.
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat.

This is the extended Gayatri form of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. It includes both the invocation and the core mantra, and is regarded as extremely rare and a remover of all ailments.

Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe.
Mahadevaya Dhimahi.
Tanno Rudrah Prachodayat.

This is the Rudra Gayatri mantra. It invokes the intellect and wisdom of Lord Rudra, dispelling ignorance and illuminating the mind.

1. Bathe early in the morning and wear clean clothes.
2. Sit facing east before a Shivling or an image of Lord Shiva.
3. Make a vow (sankalpa) by sprinkling Ganga water and meditate on Shiva.
4. Offer water, Bilva leaves, Datura, and incense to the deity.
5. Chant each mantra 108 times with a Rudraksha or Tulsi mala.
6. Mondays, Pradosh, Mahashivratri, and the month of Shravan are especially auspicious.
7. After chanting, perform Shiv Aarti and conclude with "Om Namah Shivaya."
