Janmashtami is the sacred celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This festival stands as a symbol of the victory of righteousness over unrighteousness, good over evil, and the power of devotion. Born at midnight on the Ashtami tithi of the month of Bhadrapada, Lord Krishna's birth fills the hearts of devotees with boundless joy and faith.
When the tyranny of the cruel King Kansa grew unbearable on earth and unrighteousness reached its peak, Lord Vishnu decided to incarnate himself as Krishna in order to free the earth from the burden of injustice.
As Kansa was seeing off his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva after their wedding, a divine voice declared that Devaki's eighth child would be the cause of Kansa's death. Terrified, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva.
At midnight on the Ashtami tithi of the month of Bhadrapada, Devaki gave birth to Lord Krishna inside the prison. At the moment of his birth, the entire prison was lit up with a divine glow, and Vasudeva, through divine insight, realised that this child was none other than God himself.
By divine grace, the prison guards fell into a deep sleep and the shackles fell open on their own. Vasudeva placed the infant Krishna in a basket, crossed the Yamuna river, and left him in Gokul at the home of Nanda Baba, returning with Yashoda's newborn daughter to the prison.
When Kansa learned that a daughter had been born, he tried to kill her, but she slipped from his hands and rose into the sky in the form of a goddess, warning him that his true destroyer was already safe elsewhere.
In Gokul and Vrindavan, the child Krishna performed many miraculous feats — slaying the demoness Putana, subduing the serpent Kaliya, and lifting the Govardhan mountain. Through his playful mischief and extraordinary wonders, he won the hearts of everyone around him.
When he grew up, Krishna went to Mathura and, in a grand assembly, slew his uncle Kansa, putting an end to his tyranny. In doing so, he freed his parents from imprisonment and re-established righteousness in Mathura.
Janmashtami teaches us that no matter how difficult circumstances may become, the divine always appears to protect righteousness and truth. Lord Krishna's life inspires us to walk the path of devotion, right action, and dharma.
May the grace of Lord Krishna fill your life with devotion, love, and joy.
