Maha Shivratri is the most sacred festival dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. This night is regarded as a symbol of the victory of self-realisation over darkness, of rising above worldly attachment to connect with the divine, and of the union of Shiva and Shakti. Celebrated on the Chaturdashi tithi of the month of Phalguna, it is a confluence of devotion, austerity, and meditation.
According to mythology, it was on the night of the Chaturdashi tithi in the month of Phalguna that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married. This is why this night is celebrated as Maha Shivratri, and devotees offer special worship to Lord Shiva.
Goddess Parvati performed intense penance for years to have Lord Shiva as her husband. Pleased by her unwavering devotion and determination, Lord Shiva eventually accepted her as his consort.
According to another legend, during the churning of the ocean, a deadly poison called Halahal emerged. To protect all of creation, Lord Shiva drank the poison himself. To keep it from spreading through his body, Goddess Parvati held his throat, causing the poison to remain there — which is why he came to be known as Neelkanth, the blue-throated one.
After Lord Shiva consumed the poison, all the gods and devotees stayed awake through the night, singing hymns and chanting in his praise to ease his suffering. Following this same tradition, devotees continue to keep an all-night vigil on Maha Shivratri to this day.
After Lord Shiva swallowed the poison, the gods offered water, milk, and bel leaves to cool the heat within his body. This is why, even today, the ritual of pouring water over the Shivling and offering bel leaves is followed on Shivratri.
According to a popular legend, a hunter climbed a bel tree while searching for prey and, out of hunger and thirst, unknowingly kept plucking bel leaves that fell onto a Shivling below. Pleased by this unintentional act of devotion, Lord Shiva granted him liberation.
It is believed that observing a fast with a sincere heart and devotion on Maha Shivratri and worshipping Lord Shiva destroys all sins and brings peace and happiness into one's life. The fast on this day is regarded as a symbol of self-purification and self-restraint.
Maha Shivratri teaches us that no power is greater than true devotion, penance, and self-restraint. Worshipping Lord Shiva removes the restlessness of the mind and helps the soul find its path toward union with the divine.
May the grace of Lord Shiva fill your life with peace, devotion, and positive energy.
